Hi, I’m Kate Peake, Geelong Gadget Girl.

In 2008, I announced that I was heading overseas. As well as traditional letters, I was going to have an online blog. This meant both my grandmothers needed to learn to get online and use the internet and email so they could follow me on my journey and stay connected. 

Before I left, I watched my mum try to teach my grandma how to send an email. Mum got so frustrated with her that she grabbed the device and took over. Grandma learnt nothing. I helped her instead. The whole experience made it clear to me that to help people who haven’t grown up with technology enjoy and understand their gadgets, they need time and someone to explain it clearly and without jargon. It also helped me understand that for those of us who grew up with technology it can be hard to understand what it’s like for those who didn’t.

For close to two decades, I’ve been helping people connect with and enjoy technology through my work at various libraries. I have a Bachelors degree in Information Studies and a Diploma in Sound Production. What does this mean for you? Well, I’ll know where to find the information to help you and know where to put the cables on your devices.
